RESIDENCE PERMIT

Greece continues to welcome financially independent non-EU citizens seeking long-term residence in a peaceful and culturally rich country. Under Article 163, paragraph 8 of Law 5038/2023, Greece offers a specific residence permit for Financially Independent Persons (FIPs), which is an ideal solution for retirees, remote income earners, and others with stable financial means who wish to reside in Greece without working.

Who Can Apply?

Non-EU/EEA citizens with sufficient, stable, and legal income to cover their living expenses in Greece can apply for this residence permit. This category targets individuals who wish to live in Greece without engaging in employment or running a business.

Family Members

Applicants may be accompanied by their spouse and children, each of whom receives a separate personal residence permit.

Minimum Monthly Income

To qualify, the applicant must show a minimum monthly income of €3,500, originating from legal sources such as: pensions, dividends, rental income, trust funds, and other passive income.

This base requirement increases if dependents are included in the application:

+20% for a spouse → €4,200/month total

+15% per child → e.g., one child = €4,725/month

No Work Allowed

This permit does not allow employment or self-employment in Greece.

Duration and Renewal

The residence permit is valid for 3 years, with the possibility of renewal. To renew, the applicant must meet the income criteria and prove they have spent at least 183 days per calendar year in Greece. Renewals continue to prohibit any access to the labour market.
